Musings of a Village Girl
SO YOU WANT TO BE AN ARTIST?
The music industry is presented as this glamorous nirvana where everyone is swimming in money and it’s a 24hr party time, vibe on vibes. While there might be some element of some truth to these assumptions, the reality is quite different. So you’ve decided that you have talent and want to be a professional musician.
What should you keep in mind.
• What kind of artist do you want to be? Decide on a genre and polish your skills .
• Do research, who else is in that genre, what are they doing? How can you present something different?
• Be original. No one will buy a copy when they can get the original
• Start with what you have where you are. Most people don’t pursue their creative dreams because they are waiting for have resources. The most successful creative started in their bedrooms, garages etc. JUST START
• Even in your small beginnings treat yourself and behave as big star. You are manifesting success. • Dress how you want to be seen when you “blow” • Treat the whole process seriously.
• Have a strategy of how you move from step to step. Writing, recording, mixing etc. Even in that small beginnings stage. That way you are fine tuning your process
• Ask for help. You will be surprised that most established artists are willing to mentor. Obviously don’t harass people. Be polite and know when to stop when people aren’t interested in engaging you. The right person won’t stress you.
• Be patient • Decide on the brand vision. What do you want this artist to look, feel and sound like. • If you believe in your talent, you will make sacrifices. You must be your first investor.
• Tell anybody who cares to listen about you and your craft. That is called PR.
• Use social media effectively. It’s the best radio/tv station/newspaper at your disposal that does not need money or connection. Its instant and you could get your big break there.
